Sometimes, the most memorable portraits happen in the places where people feel most at home.

Leyda Ruiseco, a Cuban hairstylist, invited us to her beauty salon for an afternoon of editorial portrait photography. What began as a simple invitation turned into a wonderful experience filled with laugher, conversation, and creativity.

We spent a beautiful and entertaining afternoon together, exploring different ways to portray Leyda in her own environment. Her salon became more than a workplace. It became the setting for a personal photographic story.

For Austin portrait photographer Javier Shirley, a compelling portrait is about observing the person, understanding the surroundings, and finding those moments when personality emerges naturally.

Throughout the session, we created a series of expressive portraits that brought together Leyda’s personality, her profession, and the atmosphere of her salon.

The result was a collection of images that went beyond the traditional beauty salon portrait, combining the spontaneity of an enjoyable afternoon with the visual language of editorial anda fine art portrait photography.
